Adoping a flock

Post by side_job »

Well it has been a couple of years since I parted with my last hen, but as I look around my place I feel that it may be time to bring the chickens home to roost... and lay eggs. So in my weekend plans, I plan to work on the enclosure in preparation of adopting a small flock. I have found a mixed flock available in the next town over, with more than half the hens currently laying, so my theory is they should be sound and strong enough to make the transition and adjust nicely for our Missouri winter ahead.
Question is, does anyone have any experience with bringing a ready flock home, and are there 'tricks' to help the girls with the move etc.

When ever we buy already laying hens we keep them confined to a small pen and coop for a few weeks before we free range them!

This is the time of year when they start to molt so you may see a drop in egg production plus the days are getting shorter which also contributes to less egg production so it may take them a while to acclimate.
